Samantha

The town was the nightmare I feared. I could still see where the dead had fallen in my mind, even though they’d been taken away. Yet despite what had happened, villagers descended on us, hugging and thanking me. The more they pressed, the guiltier I felt.

I could have done more.

The Dark God introduced me to the head steward of the village. She suffocated me with thanks, but at last, I was able to get a word in edgewise. “I want to help. Is there something I can do?”

“What do you do?” the steward asked.

“Back home, I’m a bartender.”

The Dark God’s mouth twitched in what I assumed was annoyance, so I added, “And I can swing a hammer as well as anyone. I had to help rebuild my town recently after it was viciously attacked by a monster.”

The Dark God’s eyes went ice cold, and his jaw stiffened. Although I couldn’t read his expression, I hoped he was being torn apart by shame and regret.

She pressed my hands firmly into hers. “I’m so sorry to hear about your town. These are troubled times. I just wish there was more I could do to thank you.”

“Put me to work.”

She smiled. “I have just the spot for you.”

The head steward led us to a long, low building that had a doorframe decorated with carved bees. She rapped loudly. “It’s the steward! I’ve brought help!”

The door swung open, revealing a girl about my age with silver hair and a flowing blue dress. Her signature tasted like wildflower honey and smelled like a crisp breeze. A light sheen of sweat glistened on her brow, and the wild expression in her eyes confirmed that she was overworked.

“Yes, steward? What do you need?” She pushed her hair out of her face with an irritated gesture, and then she paled when she noticed the Dark God next to me. She dropped to a knee. “Lord Wolf, I’m sorry. Thank you for everything you did for us. Is there anything I can do for you?”

“This is Samantha. She’s looking for a way to help,” he said.

The girl looked up, and her eyes widened as she noticed me. “You saved my life from a deathwing today, and my little brother as well!”

She started forward like she was going to hug me but stopped in her tracks and fumbled with her hands. “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to presume. I’m just so grateful for everything you did. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to thank you.”

I smiled. “Just put me to work. I’ve had a rough day and need to clear my head.”

“Of course! You’ll have saved me a third time because I’m about all worn out.”

The Dark God narrowed his eyes at her. “I have to ride the perimeter, so I’m leaving her in your care.”

The woman swallowed. “I understand. I’ll take good care of her, Lord Wolf.”

I breathed a sigh of relief as soon as he was gone.

The young woman looked at me with wide eyes. “You travel with him? You must be really important.
